A BRIEF DISCUSSION ON THE WAYS TO REDUCE CANCER RISK

Here we are going to discuss about some ways to reduce the risk of acquiring cancer. They are as follows:

A HEALTHY DIET

Eating a variety of different vegetables and fruits, whole grains, fish, brown rice (instead of white) and avoiding red and processed meat, less sweet intake can minimize the chance of acquiring cancer. If we continue to have healthy eating habit then it will help to keep our weight in control as being overweight is always a risk factor for cancer.

BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE

Daily physical activity is a healthy habit that lowers the risk of several types of cancer. Every week an adult should get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity  which makes heart beat and breathing faster, and induce sweating .

TAKE PART IN ORGANISED CANCER SCREENING PROGRAMS

If we do regular screening tests then it will be easier to catch some cancers early, when they are still in the early stage and is easier to treat. We should openly talk to our physician about the tests for breast, cervix, prostate cancers etc.

AVOID ALCOHOL INTAKE

Multiple researches have proved that alcohol can increase the risk of acquiring cancer. It’s time to give up alcohol.

KEEPING THE HOUSE SMOKE FREE

We should keep our home and workplace smoke free by cutting off the use of firewood and by avoiding smoking of any form. We should keep in mind that even passive smoking increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease in non-smokers.

AVOID SMOKING OR USING TOBACCO PRODUCTS

Cigarette smoking or using tobacco products like chewing tobacco leaf, use of ‘jordaa’/’gul’ presents the biggest risk for acquiring various types of cancer. Deciding to quit smoking is the best decision to save your life.

AVOID TOO MUCH SUN (Especially relevant for white skinned people)

If we can avoid too much sun then we will be able to protect ourselves from getting skin cancer. We should cover ourselves by wearing clothes that gives shade to face, neck, head, ears. When going out in sun, we should use glasses with UV protection and apply sunscreen . 

REDUCTION OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR AIR POLLUTANTS

To avoid indoor air pollution we should clean our floor carpets, mattresses, bedding, regularly to stop accumulation of dust particles. The gases that come out from refrigerator, air conditioner are also harmful.

To avoid outdoor air pollution we should use battery cars, cng supplied vehicles and stop using diesel.

BREASTFEEDING REDUCES THE MOTHER’S CANCER RISK

Women who breastfeed their babies have a lower risk of developing breast cancer in later life than  women who do not breastfeed.  So, breastfeeding is a healthy habit that a woman should continue to avoid the risk of developing cancer.

VACCINATE YOUR CHILDREN AGAINST HEPATITIS B   AND HPV

Some cancers are spread by viruses and bacteria. Nearly one fifth of all cancers in the world are caused by infectious agents, including viruses and bacteria.

 Vaccine against Hepatitis B should be given to reduce the chance of Liver cancer.

Vaccine against HPV (HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS)  should be given to young  girls to prevent development of cervix cancer .
